The Meriwether - Down Under Exhibition
On July 31 in Vermont, I hosted the Down Under Exhibition. While many of you were there - here is a recap of the paintings for those of you who weren't. I spent January - June living in Sydney, Australia. From there, I traveled nine hours north by plane to Vietnam. East to New Zealand, and north once again to Japan. Over the course of the nine months, I produced eight oil paintings - which traveled back to the US with me rapped in t-shirts in my suitcase. Below are these paintings.
The idea for the series started with this this piece - Stargazing. At an exhibition opening in Sydney, I met the gallery owner who informed me of a show the following month which still had spots open for submissions. The theme of the show was "black". Over the next week, I worked through ideas in my sketchbook based on things I was seeing in the city. While at Gordon's Bay, a small rocky inlet on the ocean, I watched the small boat come in. While on the ferry across the harbor, I saw the lighthouse. Sitting across from me on the train was a grandfather showing his grandson a map on the wall. All these small things came together in my sketchbook to create this composition. Which once painted - got into the gallery in Sydney. It was my first show with professional artists and an insanely great week.
